Ten Headlines for One Article

·

·

I wrote 10 headlines for the same article this week.

At first that sounded excessive.

After the first three, I started to understand why the assignment asked for 10.

My article was about Cyprienne KENAKALE and Chris MOUSSOKI using AI in Brazzaville. The basic story did not change, but each headline made the story feel slightly different.

“AI Is Already Changing How Students Learn in Brazzaville” puts the emphasis on change.

“Students Use AI to Study, While Teachers Urge Caution” introduces a small conflict.

“In Brazzaville Classrooms, AI Brings Help and Doubt” feels more like something I might see in a print publication.

Same article. Different door.

As a graphic designer, this made sense to me in another way. In design, hierarchy tells the eye where to enter first. The headline does something similar with a story. Before the reader knows Cyprienne, Chris or any of the details, the headline has already told them what to pay attention to.

That is a lot of responsibility for a few words.

I also noticed how tempting it is to make a headline dramatic. Adding a stronger word can make it sound more exciting, but it can also make the headline promise something the article does not really deliver.

I hesitated with a few of mine for exactly that reason.

The one I kept coming back to was: “Students Use AI to Study, While Teachers Urge Caution.”

It is not the most creative sentence I wrote.

But it tells the truth about the article.

Cyprienne uses AI to learn. Chris uses it too, but he questions the answers. There is enough tension there already. I do not need to manufacture more.

That was probably my main lesson from writing 10 headlines.

Sometimes the clever headline is not the useful one.

Sometimes the simple one wins.
